The job was to turn this family room into a space that this family would actually want to spend time in it. Seemed simple enough. It also helps that they were super cool clients and totally open to a modern design with a mid-century twist. Simplicity, clean lines and lots of texture and textiles. The design is minimal yet warm.
For paint, I wanted to add some drama by painting a few walls black. Not everyone is open to the idea of black walls so I was super excited when they agreed! We went with Caviar by Sherwin Williams and Repose gray for the surrounding walls to make sure the space was still bright and inviting. I also opted to have the built in entertainment cabinet painted black to cover up the drab gray that was there before.
This new modular sectional by FourHands was the center of the design and what all the other furniture was based around. Having a large and functional sectional for the family and guests to lounge on was a priority. The clean texture of this guy had me drooling (You’ll see it in a few other projects that are coming up too.) The mirrored side tables and round coffee table come from Fourhands also. You’ll notice the texture in those pieces as well. The sideboard is a new piece but looks so deliciously old and worn which added to the mid-century story of the space. Mixing old and new pieces is a great way to add dimension to your design story. Old (or in this case, pieces that just look old) create so much warmth in an otherwise pretty modern space. The side board and new kitchen table came from DownEast Home.
I like to think of the accessories as the “jewelry” of the space. No need to over-do it but a few stand out pieces and plants are necessary to pull everything together. As usual, I opted for clean, mid-century pots from west elm and live, easy to care for plants. Stacks of books, trios of candles (that I encouraged this homeowner to actually burn) simple framed photos and art, and some pieces from their personal collection rounded off the design. The vintage record player was a perfect way to add their own personal style. The pillows required some contrasting patterns and materials to continue our story. These custom, down-filled pillows are so comfy and add even more depth. The camel color leather was necessary to pull in the new barstools from west elm which are to dieee for!
Finishing thoughts if you’re re-doing your own space.
- Decide on your own style and what kind of story you’re going for. Are you modern? Traditional? Boho? Industrial? A combo? Most of us fall into some soft of combination.
- Go with your gut. Try not to over think every last detail. Usually our first instinct is the correct one.
- Don’t be afraid to be bold. Go ahead and paint that wall black, or green or whatever brings you joy.
- Call a designer if you need help. It’s worth the investment! If you’re feeling overwhelmed, having a professional help you spend your money in the most efficient way and bring your vision to life is the way to go.
