Our living room is arguably the least used room in the house. It’s not like we ever actually use this “formal” sitting area when we have people over. But the thing about this space is that it’s the first room you see when walking in the front door. It instantly gives an impression and sets “the mood” (*pops a bottle of champaign*) So even though we use it the least, it’s definitely the most important! I love walking in the front door everyday because I have something beautiful there to greet me.
Since this is a large room we’ll break it up into sections. Im sure you don’t want to read the “book” that I could write about styling this space all today. So I’ll talk about the sofa and coffee table today and then we’ll move through the rest of the room next time. Sound good?
I’ll start by saying that this room is far from finished. It for sure needs some finishing touches and you’ll probably notice that the walls are naked (gasp). Art is tough you guys. Not only is it expensive, but I’m having trouble finding (and committing to) the perfect pieces. On top of that, Charlie and I have to agree on whatever we hang which isn’t always easy. (Okay, maybe I can be a little stubborn…maybe) Do we want giant paintings? Photography? a frame wall? I guess we’ll have to take some time to to discuss all of these options later. So if you have some ideas, know a great artist or if you happen to be a great artist yourself and you think you have something to finish off this room and make it look bomb then please shoot me an e-mail or leave a comment!
Moving along…This leather chesterfield sofa is by far my favorite thing in this room. It’s buttery soft, has a ton of great texture and I love that the black leather is slightly distressed for just a touch of a faded look. It was worth Every. Single. Penny! Find it here: Chesterfield Sofa
I styled it by adding texture rather than color. When using neutral colors like black, white, and gray it’s important to use a lot of different textures to create interest. In this case, I added the furry lamb pillow to make it look extra cozy while the graphic black & white pillow adds some much needed dimension. Both pillows are from West elm (surprise surprise) You can find them here: Mongolian lamb pillow and here: Similar black and white pillow
I seriously swooned over this blanket from Anthropologie. It’s super soft, warm and is pure comfort! I waited until it finally went on sale and I nabbed it for like $50! Score! It’s sold out now but you can find something similar here: PB pom pom blanket and here: Overstock pom pom blanket It adds so much interest to the sofa. Don’t you think?
The little sheep skin rug is the finishing touch and you can find it here: Sheep skin rug bonus: it’s on sale right now!
When looking for a coffee table I absolutely knew that I wanted something simple, yet chic. I also knew that it had to be round. It felt like the fireplace was so square that I needed to soften it up a bit. When I found this concrete table from CB2 I knew instantly that it was the one. Find it here: CB2 coffee table P.s. how cool is the idea of a concrete coffee table? It’s not something you see everyday…and Im kind of obsessed with it!
The books and accessories are just the pop of color that this table needs. I find a lot of books at Anthropologie and primarily look for books with beautiful covers when styling a coffee table or bookcase. Adding a tray with some fun chotchkies (look that one up on urban dictionary for a laugh chotchkie def.) give it the right touch of fun and something pretty for your eyes to look at. Look for a future post about shopping for the perfect books, accessories, and chotchkies and how to put them all together.
Next time I’ll talk about the rest of the furniture and fun stuff in this room. So, come back! Thanks for reading!
xoxo,
Kelly
