When it comes to decorating a playroom, things get a little tricky. You want a super cute, fun, whimsical space that your kids can enjoy right? OK, done! But as soon as you add some toys… the place becomes a complete disaster! Believe me, I know. I’ve totally been there, am there, and I’m sure I’ll continue to live in the toy hurricane for quite some time (sigh) Some parents might give up completely and decide that the playroom doesn’t need to be cute. I’ve heard that “Screw it, it’s ugly, the kids are little anyway so I’m not decorating” mentality before. But… fear not! I have some helpful solutions on how to manage this mess AND make a really fun and inviting space for your kids annnnd yourself (after all, this is YOUR house right?)
Behold… good storage!
Yes people, do yourselves a favor and invest in some storage that can contain the mess! Our playroom was busting at the seams before we got this beauty from Ikea. Let me tell you, it wasn’t expensive. It looks clean and modern, and it hides everything out of sight when we’re not playing! These things are module so you can mix and match pieces to build something that will fit your space exactly! Get yours here: Ikea Stuva System
So, once all the toys are organized and out of sight you can actually focus on a great looking space for everyone to enjoy!
I’ve been swooning over this wallpaper for…well…forever! I love it. No… I LOOOVE it! It’s just the right amount of fun. Don’t be scared to choose something unexpected and maybe even a little weird for a playroom. It’s the one room in the house that you can get a little silly. This Julia Rothman “Daydream” paper is from Hygge & West and you can get this paper in several different colors. Find all options here: Daydream wallpaper
This sofa is from West Elm. It’s simple grey microfiber (microfiber is a MUST with little kids, it cleans like a dream) and I jazzed it up with these fun pillows. They’re from all over. Little boutiques, Etsy, Etc. Keep your eyes open for fun pillows while your out and about. I’ve linked up some good ideas here: Lulu & Georgia pillows | West Elm pillows | Furbish Studio pillows | Domino pillows
This little yellow table (also from West Elm) was on super-sale and under $100! The yellow was perfect for my colorful space and I love that it adds yet again a little unexpected pop. This one is unavailable but here are some other options: Powell table| Borden table | Neon nightstand | On-the-grid nightstand Oh, and how cute are these little succulent planters?! Eeep… I love finding silly stuff like this!
The rug (West Elm again) is whimsical and I love it…but honestly it’s in rough shape now. This kids kind of killed it. It needs a good deep cleaning at least. I was optimistic about putting a light colored rug in a playroom but in hindsight I wish I had gone with something a little darker and with more pattern to hide stains. Mine is unavailable but here are some other good options too: Cosmo Rug | Diamond striped rug | Painted desert rug | Mirabelle rug
I framed the kids art and placed them around the room. They’re very proud of their creations and love having them on display in “their” room. As for the larger art pieces, I got them from Ikea. They were super affordable! Maybe someday I’ll upgrade them, but for now, these prints are cute and work in the space. Here they are: Trilling poster set I also love these prints if you’re ok spending a little more: Big city art | Ice Cream art
I love that this room has a ton of natural light and we’re lucky that we have a door leading out to the courtyard. When the wether is nice we keep that door open and our play space extends outside.
All in all, it’s a fun little room (emphasis on the “little”) I’m definitely working on teaching the kids to clean up after themselves. They know where everything is stored, and that they have much more room to have fun when their space is tidy.
So be bold, be bright, don’t be afraid to add silly and whimsy to your child’s playroom. You’ll appreciate it more when you’re in there paying with them (and not to mention when you have guests over)
Hope you found some unexpected inspiration in this post! If you have any ideas for ME them pleeeease let me know! Comments are 1000% welcome!
Have a FAB week!
Xoxo,
Kelly

1) I love that pillow
2) I love the storage. I have cube organizers in daughter’s room (and all over my house) but that IKEA system looks adult enough to maybe go in my living room.
kellyestone@yahoo.com says
Thanks Lee! Yes, those storage systems are the BEST! I love that they look sleek and hide all the toys away so I never have to see them at all when the kids aren’t playing. Check em’ out on the Ikea website!

Can I just say I love this room?? I wish I had this for my daughter. It is so modern and clean, yet there are toys everywhere with so much storage. Love it.

Thank you so much Mindy! Those storage cabinets from Ikea were so affordable and keep those toys out of sight. Check them out for sure. And a lot of time all you need to “punch” up a playroom is some fun wallpaper 🙂
